Where is the City?

오로빌은 어디에 있나요?

Auroville is located in south India, 150 kms south of Chennai (Madras) and about 10 kms north of Pondicherry town. The journey from Chennai is about three hours by road. Buses from Chennai are frequent, and cost about IRS 50. A taxi to Auroville from the airport costs up to IRS 1,500; but it is much cheaper and more convenient (IRS 1,050) to book an Auroville taxi to pick you up. Contact your guesthouse directly for the same.

오로빌은 남인도에 있습니다. 첸나이(옛 마드라스)에서 남쪽으로 150킬로미터, 폰디체리 시내로부터는 북쪽으로 약 10킬로미터 떨어져 있습니다. 첸나이에서 오는 데는 약 세 시간 정도 걸립니다. 첸나이에서 수시로 버스가 있으며 비용은 50루피 정도입니다. 마드라스공항에서 오로빌까지 택시로 오시면 1,500루피 정도 드는데, 오로빌 택시를 예약해서 마중 나오도록 하면 1,050루피 정도로 비용도 절약하고 오시는 길이 좀 더 쾌적할 것입니다. 마찬가지로 게스트하우스에도 미리 직접 연락해놓는 것이 좋습니다.

Auroville has a rural ambience. It consists of nearly 100 different settlements, spread out over 25 km2 (of which a little over 10 km2 so far is owned by the community). Distances between the outlying settlements can be several kilometres. Within the Auroville area there are several villages, and still a lot of village-owned land.

오로빌은 전원의 정취를 지니고 있습니다. 약 25평방킬로미터의 지역(이 중 오로빌이 차지하고 있는 지역은 현재까지 10평방킬로미터 조금 넘습니다)에 걸쳐 대략 100여 곳의 주거지가 산재해 있습니다. 외곽지역의 주거지는 맞은편과 수킬로미터 떨어져 있기도 합니다. 오로빌내에도 원주민 마을이 몇 군데 있고, 아직도 많은 땅이 원주민 소유입니다.

The climate in Auroville is sub-tropical. From December to March the day-time temperature range is 24 - 30 C (74 - 85 F) . From April onwards, the temperature rises and can reach a peak of about 40 C (105 F) in May-June; occasional rainfall from July onwards starts to bring the temperature down. The main monsoon period usually starts around mid October and continues to mid December. Nights are generally about 5 C cooler than the days.

On the surface, Auroville can appear rather incomprehensible. It is an intense and challenging experiment, attempting the seemingly impossible, and one needs to be ready to actively participate in such an adventure. The meaning of Auroville only becomes clearer in the context of the vision of its founders, which has stimulated people from all over the world to join in this laboratory of evolution'.

얼핏 보면 오로빌은 이해할 수 없는 곳으로 느껴질 수도 있습니다. 오로빌은 불가능해 보이는 것을 시도하는, 하나의 강렬하고 도전적인 실험입니다. 그러므로 이러한 탐험을 하려면 적극적으로 뛰어들 마음의 준비가 필요합니다. 오로빌의 의미는 전세계의 사람들을 이 <진화의 실험장>에 뛰어들게 한 창립자의 전망을 이해함으로써만 더욱 명확히 드러날 것입니다.

Visitors to Auroville are sometimes disappointed to find here no Ashram, no typical tourist attractions or generally welcoming atmosphere. This is firstly because Auroville is quite different to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, where people are considered to have consecrated their lives to integral yoga (as compared, in Auroville, to an experiment in human unity), and secondly because Auroville is not a tourist place, despite being referred to in travel and tourist literature, and does not devote as much time and energy to welcoming tourists as sites established specifically for that purpose.

때때로 오로빌에 들리셨다가 아쉬람도 없고, 관광객의 눈을 끌 만한 것도 없고, 특별히 반가와 하는 것 같지도 않은 분위기에 실망하시는 분들도 있습니다. 그것은 첫째로, 오로빌이 통합요가의 수행에 일생을 바친 사람들이 사는 스리 오로빈도 아쉬람과는 사뭇 다르기 때문일테고,(이에 비해 오로빌은 인류의 일체성을 실험하는 곳이지요) 둘째로는, 관광/여행 관련자료에 언급되어 있기는 해도 오로빌은 관광지가 아니어서 특별히 그런 목적으로 마련된 장소들처럼 관광객을 맞아들이는 데에 시간과 에너지를 많이 기울이지 않기 때문일 것입니다.

Casual/day visitors are encouraged to go first to the Visitors Centre , which is open daily from 9:00 to 17:30, and offers information, exhibitions, a video viewing facility, a cafeteria and shopping facilities.

가볍게 하루 방문하시고자 할 경우 먼저 방문객 센터로 가보십시오. 이곳은 매일 9시부터 오후 5시 30분까지 열려 있습니다. 여러가지 정보를 얻으실 수 있고, 전시회, 비디오 시설, 카페테리아와 쇼핑센터가 있습니다.

Those who come with a deeper interest and actually want to visit one of Auroville's projects should make an appointment with the concerned place through the Information Desk at the Visitors Centre.

Guest accommodation is available in various settlements around the township area. The charges vary between Rs 150 and Rs 750 per person per night depending on the type of accommodation and facilities provided. Pre-booking is advised, specially for the December to March and August-September periods. This can be done either through the Auroville Guest Service, located upstairs at the Solar Kitchen (avguests@auroville.org.in), or by contacting one of the guest houses directly

Note that each guest is asked, as are the Aurovilians, to contribute financially towards the maintenance and development of the township and its infrastructure (water, roads, electricity, afforestation, farms, education and so on...). At the present time guests are requested to give a contribution of Rs 60 per day per adult or Rs 30 per day per teenager (aged 12 to 19). For children below the age of 12 no payment is required. There is also a student rate of Rs 30 per day.

오로빌 주민들과 마찬가지로 모든 체류객들은 오로빌 지역의 개발유지비, 기간시설비(용수,도로, 전기, 조림, 농경, 교육 등)에 재정적인 기여를 할 것을 요청받습니다. 현재 어른의 경우 1일 60루피, 청소년(만 12세에서 19세까지)은 1일 30루피의 기여금을 받습니다. 만 12세 미만의 아동인 경우 여기서 제외됩니다. 학생인 경우는 일당 30루피를 내면 됩니다.

The guest contribution is reduced to Rs 50 if the stay is for one month or longer. Please note that this contribution is NOT included in the guesthouse price.

Upon payment of this contribution, Guest Passes/ Cards are issued by some of the major guesthouses, by the Financial Service near Aspiration and the Guest Service at Solar Kitchen. This Pass will enable you to move more freely through the township since for certain facilities and services you will need to show it.

주요 게스트 하우스나, 아스피레이션 커뮤니티와 인접한 파이낸셜 서비스, 쏠라키친내의 게스트 서비스 창구에서 이 기여금을 내시면 게스트 패스(게스트 카드라고도 함)가 발급됩니다. 이 패스는 여러분이 오로빌 내부를 좀 더 자유롭게 다니실 수 있도록 도와 드립니다. 특정 편의 시설이나 서비스를 받으려면 이 패스를 제시해야 하기 때문입니다.

General cost

일상적인 비용

A meal at the Solar Kitchen costs Rs 45, Guest Card is required.

A good meal in Pondicherry costs around Rs 100, or more, depending on the class of establishment.
