The German Pavilion – an expression of spirit and creation

The idea to start work on Auroville’s German Pavilion came in 1992, and since then a group of interested people have met regularly on weekends for intense workshop sessions. Support for this group and the Pavilion-Initiative in Auroville is from AV International (AVI) Germany e.V. - a recognised public association (see appendix).

The remarks of Sri Aurobindo about Germany that are found in his book ”The Human Cycle” have served as a reference with regard to the contents of the German Pavilion. According to these insights, the fulfilment and future task of the ”German Soul” lies in the happy realisation of both the idealistic and pragmatic aspects of their nature (see appendix). Their pre-eminent aspects are on one hand philosophy/vision and music, and on the other hand a dispassionate and rational attitude towards research and production. Hence the need for a utilisation model for the German Pavilion, which has to fulfil this particularly spectrum of qualities.

Thus to conclude, the Pavilion shall not only embody the German soul aspects in a symbolic way, but should be simultaneously of practical benefit to a vital and essential task of Auroville.

On August 15, 2001, an inauguration ceremony and reception for German Aurovillians marked the beginning of the real planning- and construction phase of the German Pavilion in Auroville.
